I got snapchat when I was in sixth grade. It was the first form of social media that I was allowed to have. What was the harm of taking pictures to send to your friends? Right? Well if you’ve ever used the app, then you would know that there are hundreds of filters you can use to alter your face and body.

This is one of the most popular filters: The Flower Crown. It is meant to add a cute, colorful flower crown across your head. As you can see from the image, the filter doesn’t just add the funky headpiece to a person’s head. It arches the person’s eyebrows, slims the nose, changes their eye shape, and elongates their face.

Seeing this as a kid I began to believe that in order to be beautiful enough to wear a flower crown I had to have a longer face and bigger eyes. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES SOMEONE CHANGE THEIR FACIAL STRUCTURE? Final answer…. you can’t. But it does install a sense of insecurity beginning from a very young age.
